What to Do on Mill Avenue (Beyond the Bars)
Mill Avenue in Tempe has way more going on than bar-hopping. Here's what ASU students actually enjoy on Mill Avenue during the day and night.
Mill Avenue Is More Than a Bar District
Every ASU student knows about Mill Avenue. Most ASU students have been there on a Thursday or Friday night and experienced the crowded sidewalks, cover charges, and questionable decisions. That's real. But Mill Avenue during the day, and on non-bar nights, is a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time.
Here's what's worth your time beyond the bar scene.
Coffee During the Day
Cartel Coffee Lab on Mill is legitimately excellent — not in a pretentious way, in a "this coffee is actually good and the space is calm" way. Go on a weekday morning and it's one of the better places to work near campus. They take their craft seriously, which means the drinks are consistent and the baristas actually know what they're doing.
If you need something faster and cheaper, the Dutch Bros on Apache isn't technically on Mill but it's a three-minute walk. No judgment on Dutch Bros — sometimes you just need a large cold brew and you don't want to spend $7.
Tempe Town Lake
Mill Avenue dead-ends into Tempe Town Lake, which is one of the more underappreciated spots near ASU. The lake has a path around it that's popular for running and biking, paddle boarding and kayak rentals, and just sitting near water in a city that usually doesn't have any. On weekend mornings it's busy but not unpleasant. Weekend evenings have a nice energy, especially in the cooler months.
Live Music
Mill Avenue has a couple of live music venues that book actual bands, not just DJs at bars. Marquee Theatre (just off Mill) is the main mid-size venue and gets touring acts regularly. Check their calendar — tickets are usually reasonably priced and the venue is small enough that every seat feels decent.
There's also occasional street performance and outdoor events along Mill, especially during the fall and spring when the weather allows it.
The Independent Shops
Mill has gone through several cycles of indie shops opening and closing, but there are usually a few worth visiting:
- Used bookstores come and go on Mill; check what's there currently
- Vintage and thrift options exist in the surrounding area
- Local art galleries occasionally have free opening nights worth attending
It's not a shopping destination by any stretch, but if you're already walking Mill, the shops break up the monotony.
Food That Isn't a Drunk Burrito at Midnight
Four Peaks Brewing Company is on Mill and it's legitimately good — both the beer and the food. The Kilt Lifter is their flagship beer and it's worth trying if you're 21+. The patio is great in fall and spring. Prices are reasonable for a sit-down restaurant.
There are also Thai, pizza, and various other options within a block or two of Mill that do consistent work for lunch and early dinner. The tourist-trap spots are obvious; the locals-leaning spots are worth finding.
Gammage Auditorium
Strictly speaking, Gammage is on the ASU campus and not on Mill, but it's a five-minute walk and it's one of the most underused resources for students. ASU Gammage hosts Broadway touring productions, concerts, and special performances throughout the year. Student ticket pricing is genuinely affordable — significantly cheaper than the standard price — and the venue itself is architecturally remarkable (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright).
Check the calendar at the start of each semester and book ahead for shows you want to see. They sell out.
Events and Farmers Markets
Tempe holds a farmers market and various outdoor events along the Mill Avenue and Town Lake corridor regularly. The Tempe Marketplace and other event spaces nearby also run weekend programming. None of it is life-changing, but it's a good excuse to get off campus without spending a lot of money.
When to Go
Mill Avenue is best visited:
- Weekday mornings and early afternoons (calm, easy to get coffee, good for walking)
- Friday and Saturday afternoons before the evening crowd
- During the cooler months (November through March) when outdoor seating is actually enjoyable
Avoid it on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights after 9pm unless bar-hopping is specifically your goal. The streets become congested, parking is a nightmare, and the energy is very different from daytime Mill.
