Best Deals at the ASU End-of-Semester Sale Rush

How to take advantage of the ASU end-of-semester sale rush in Tempe. What goes on sale, when to shop, and how to get the best deals before everyone moves out.

The Best Time to Buy Used Stuff at ASU

If you're an ASU student who plans ahead, the best shopping you'll do all year happens in late April and early May. That's when thousands of graduating seniors and departing students decide they'd rather have $40 than haul a desk chair home.

The end-of-semester sale rush is real, it's reliable, and if you know how to navigate it, you can fully furnish an apartment or upgrade your electronics setup for a fraction of retail.

Why Prices Drop So Much

The economics are straightforward: supply spikes, urgency spikes, and time window collapses. A student with three days before their lease ends and a couch they can't fit in their car will take $50 for something they paid $200 for. They don't want to deal with junk removal companies, they don't want to leave it in the dumpster, and they definitely don't want to haul it.

This creates a brief window — roughly the two to three weeks surrounding finals — where the used market tips completely in the buyer's favor.

The Timeline to Maximize Your Shopping

Early April (4–6 weeks before finals): Start monitoring. This is when the first wave of listings appears — organized people who know they're leaving and want to sell before the rush. Prices are still reasonable, not rock-bottom, but the selection is best.

Late April (2–3 weeks before finals): Prime time. Prices start dropping, selection is still large, and motivated sellers are easy to negotiate with. This is the window to buy furniture, appliances, and mid-tier electronics.

Finals week (1–2 weeks before move-out): The final drop. Listings flood in, prices crater, and "free to good home, must pick up today" starts appearing. You can find genuinely good stuff for free or nearly free, but you need to move fast and be flexible about timing.

Move-out weekend: The last-minute market. Free items appear on sidewalks near apartment complexes (Vela, Skyview, Vantage, Tempe Gardens). Arrive early — the good stuff goes fast.

How to Find the Best Stuff

Check these platforms daily starting in mid-April:

  • ASU List: Specifically for ASU students, which means the items are physically in Tempe and the sellers are fellow students.
  • Facebook Marketplace: Filter by your location (Tempe, 5-mile radius) and sort by newest. Check every day.
  • Nextdoor Tempe: Surprisingly good for free items and neighbor-to-neighbor sales.
  • Facebook ASU groups: The ASU Class of 2026 group, ASU Off-Campus Housing group, and similar groups see tons of "moving out, everything must go" posts.

Set up alerts: On Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp, you can save searches and get notifications. Set up searches for "couch Tempe," "desk Tempe," "monitor Tempe" and let the deals come to you.

Walk the apartment corridors: Around the last week of May, apartment complexes near campus — Vela, Skyview, Vantage, University House — have a sidewalk sale culture. Items get left near dumpsters or in common areas. Walk by in the morning before facilities teams haul things away.

Buying Strategy for the Rush

Have cash ready: Sellers moving out fast want to close deals quickly. Cash closes faster than waiting for Venmo to transfer. Bring $20s and $50s.

Be responsive: In this market, the buyer who responds to a listing within 30 minutes beats the one who checks two hours later. Turn on notifications for your search platforms.

Have a truck or SUV lined up: The bottleneck for many great deals is moving furniture. Have a friend with a truck you can call, or know which U-Haul pickup location near you has cargo vans available for $19.95 + per-mile.

Don't lowball aggressively in the last week: Paradoxically, some sellers in the final days have so many inquiries on crash-priced items that they don't need to negotiate. On items priced at $30 that should be $150, the seller is already cutting you a break. Be respectful.

If You're Incoming (Moving to ASU in August)

Fall semester starts in late August. The spring move-out rush is in May. That's a 3-month gap. What to do:

Keep a list of what you need. Browse listings in early May even if you're moving in August. Some sellers will hold items for a small deposit. Alternatively, revisit listings in late July — some summer students also move out, and prices drop again.

The ASU student marketplace isn't just a spring phenomenon. New listings appear year-round. But if you can time a major purchase to coincide with May move-out or December move-out (smaller, but still real), you'll pay significantly less for the same things.
