Moving Out of ASU Housing? Here's What to Sell Before You Go

Moving out of your ASU apartment? A practical guide to what's worth selling, how to price it, and where ASU students actually buy used stuff.

Moving Out of ASU Housing: What to Sell, What to Toss, and How to Do It Fast

Move-out season at ASU is a specific kind of chaos. Every May and August, thousands of students simultaneously need to empty their apartments, and the Tempe dumpsters fill up with furniture that's worth real money if you just take an hour to sell it.

Don't be the person who leaves a $200 futon on the curb. Here's how to offload your stuff before you go.

What Actually Sells Fast Near ASU

Furniture: Desks, desk chairs, bed frames, dressers, futons, and couches all move quickly in the week before move-out. Incoming students and students who are moving into unfurnished apartments are actively looking. Price it right and it'll be gone in a day.

Mini fridges and microwaves: These are perennial sellers near campus. Students moving into dorms or smaller units need them. A functional mini fridge that retails for $120 will sell for $50–$70 without effort.

Kitchen items: Instant Pots, air fryers, blenders, coffee makers — students buy these. Individual plates and pots less so, but a decent cookware set priced right will find a buyer.

Bedding and linens: Twin XL and full-size sets move if they're clean and reasonably priced. Not glamorous, but there's always a buyer.

Textbooks: Check prices on ASU List, Chegg, and Amazon before listing. Some are worth real money; some aren't. Know which is which before pricing.

Bikes: A functional bike near ASU is always in demand. Tempe is very bikeable and bikes are expensive new. Even a beat-up functional bike sells.

Electronics: Monitors, keyboards, Ethernet switches, older laptops — tech-adjacent items sell fast in a college market.

Where to List Near ASU

ASU List is the best venue for student-to-student sales near Tempe campus. It's free, the buyers are local (no shipping), and they're motivated — they need the thing you're selling. Post with photos and a reasonable price and you'll get responses quickly.

Facebook Marketplace has high volume in Tempe and the surrounding areas. Good for furniture and bigger items.

Offerup works well for higher-value items like bikes and electronics.

The ASU subreddit occasionally has buy/sell threads, though it's less reliable as a marketplace than the dedicated platforms.

How to Price It

The golden rule: price for quick sale, not for maximum return. You're moving out on a deadline. A couch priced at $80 that sells today is better than a couch priced at $120 that doesn't sell and you have to haul to Goodwill.

General guidelines:

  • Furniture: 20–40% of retail, depending on condition
  • Electronics: 40–60% of retail, working condition required
  • Kitchen appliances: 30–50% of retail
  • Bikes: Varies widely — research comparable Craigslist listings
  • Textbooks: Compare to current online prices, then price 10–15% below

Logistics: Making the Sale Smooth

  • Meet buyers in the lobby or a common area of your complex (safer, easier)
  • Venmo, Cash App, or cash — confirm payment method upfront
  • Have your unit clean and accessible — a buyer who walks up to clutter is more likely to lowball
  • List early: the best buyers are locked up in the first wave. If you wait until the last two days before move-out, you're competing with everyone else who procrastinated

What to Just Donate or Toss

Not everything is worth the effort to sell:

  • Worn or damaged items that would require serious lowballing to move
  • Individual kitchen utensils, mismatched dishes
  • Cheap decor items
  • Items that would cost more to transport than they'd sell for

Arizona Goodwill locations in Tempe accept furniture and household goods. ASU also has donation drives during move-out season — check ASU Housing's announcements for drop-off locations.

The Bottom Line

Moving out of ASU housing is the best opportunity you'll have to convert stuff you'd otherwise haul home into cash. Start listing on ASU List and Facebook Marketplace at least a week before your move-out date, price to sell, and you can realistically walk away with $200–$500 depending on what you have.
